Buying ready tied carp rigs

Korda Chod Rig - a classic carp rig over the last few years - click image to view more details Tying your own carp rigs is by far the cheapest and best option. Also it gives you a sense of satisfaction that you can make your own rig up which is custom made for your carp fishing.

But for some anglers they find the whole process a bit difficult to grasp or perhaps don’t want the hassle of tying their own rigs to a certain length or specification. Or maybe they might simply be lacking in a bit of confidence to be able to tie their own rigs and trust that they will hold a big fish. We’ve all had them feelings, right?

So with that said there is now a whole range of ready tied carp rigs on the market.

These pre tied carp rigs are very effective and will without doubt catch you fish. To be honest I still sometimes buy ready tied carp rigs just to have as back up!

They are quite cheap to buy just so long as you don’t go through them quickly, because then the expense will start to add up!

There are many different brands of pre tied carp rigs on the market but personally I think Korda ready tied carp rigs are the best. But ESP also have a good selection of pre tied hook lengths.

The rig that you choose very much depends on the overall fishing set up that you are looking to use (i.e. fixed or running lead system) and of course the conditions of the lake bed is very important.

For instance whether the lake bed is a soft silty bottom or a hard gravel bottom, will have a big influence on what rig you decide to use.

The Majority of ready made carp rigs are excellent for most bait presentations; in particular for boilies, tiger nuts and large pellets.

Pre tied hooklengths

When it comes to ready tied carp rigs some anglers tend to over complicate things. Basically all of the below pre tied rigs will work in most situations but most carp anglers have different views when it comes to picking the right carp rig for each fishing scenario.

Once you’ve bought or made up your own ready tied carp rigs a couple of classic set ups to use is the simple in line lead rig set up and the fixed lead safety clip rig.

I often use these two set ups and have had a lot of success. Both have a good presentation and are best used in the following situations:

In line rig (free running):

In line Rig

In-line rig – a very popular and successful carp rig!

This can be fished either fixed or as a free running rig. This is a very simple carp rig but just as effective as a lot of other setups. The free running rig is good to fish in situations where the bites are more sensitive i.e. on more pressured waters or for winter carp fishing.

The free running lead means that there is a lot less resistance which should in theory mean that you get more confident takes from carp resulting in better bite indication.

To fix the lead to create a bolt rig effect, simply attach a shot or ledger stop on the line at the top end of the lead.

Tackle needed to make up this rig is as follows (click on tackle items to view):

  1. Korda KD ready tied carp hooklength or one made up yourself.
  2. Plastic bead.
  3. Korda 2 – 3oz Inline lead weight.
  4. Shot or ledger stop for the line (optional).
  5. Kryston sinking putty to ensure the rig stays fixed to the lake bed.

Fixed lead safety rig:

Fixed Lead Safety Clip Rig

Fixed Lead Safety Clip Rig – This is probably one of the most popular carp rigs used!

This is pretty much a bolt rig but with the safety element included. A bolt rig simply means that once a fish picks up the bait it will feel the weight of the lead and so the hook will automatically set into the carp’s mouth which results in the fish bolting off at speed.

Basically if the rig gets caught up in weed or another snag then the lead is ejected so the end result is that you are still connected directly with the carp.

This will help when playing the fish as you have a truer contact with the carp and the fish more often than not will come straight to the surface making it easier to play and guide to the landing net.

Tackle needed to make up this rig is as follows (click on tackle items to view):

Korda Lead Clip Action Pack

  1. Korda KD ready tied carp hooklength or one made up yourself.
  2. Korda 3 – 4oz lead with swivel attachment.
  3. Korda kwik link (to change over your hooklength or leads with ease).
  4. Korda lead clip action pack.
  5. Kryston sinking putty to ensure the rig stays fixed to the lake bed.

In addition to the above Korda lead clip action pack another popular rig set up is the leadcore leader rig which is quite similar and something that I use a lot and have great confidence in. The only real difference is that instead of using tubing a length of leadcore material is used which is very strong and sinks rapidly and is guaranteed to stay pinned to the lake bed.

There are two types of leadcore leader. Firstly there is the ring swivel leadcore leader which is designed for fishing with inline free running leads. The second type is the lead clip version which can be used semi-fixed or running and can have either kwik links or swivels for versatility.
