My Top 3 Carp Fishing Books

Carp: Location, Feeding and Bait by Jon Wood – Price £19.00

It’s without doubt that over the last couple of decades carp fishing has exploded in popularity. Although fishing techniques and baits have evolved over the years, and will continue to do so, the same questions are at the forefront of every angler’s mind: Where are the fish? What’s happening under the water? What bait and rigs should I use etc..?

Book Review:

A must read for all carp anglers, especially newbies, is Carp: Location, Feeding and Bait.

This book pretty much tells you everything you need to know about carp fishing before you’ve even put a bait into the water. The most important part of carp fishing is locating the fish. This book talks about the best methods for locating carp in all weathers and at different times of the year. Some great tips here which I’m sure will help in your own fishing.

Also the different methods and tactics involved in outwitting the carp. Such as feeding habits and advice on the key areas to pre-bait and how much bait to actually use. This is really important if you want to build up the confidence of the carp in an area where you intend to fish for them.

Choosing the right bait is also another important factor. I’ve talked about my top 10 best carp baits and how important it is to pick the right bait for the right situation. There are a lot of good carp baits out there which will catch you big carp, and some which cost very little buy. Some of the biggest carp in this country have been caught on sweetcorn for example. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter what your budget is; if you are prepared to put in the time and effort in locating the fish and studying their feeding patterns then you will be in with a chance of catching!

Ritchie on Carp: The Whole Story by Ritchie McDonald – Price £25.00

Ritchie Mcdonald is a true legend within the carp fishing world. Famous for catching the biggest living Carp in the UK, the book describes in detail his many adventures at Redmire Pool, Ashlea, Savay, Yateley and his pioneering trip to Lake Cassien in France. This new book describes Ritchie’s whole angling career from his first fishing trip to the present day, and his turbulent time away from the bank that came close to claiming his life.

Inside every copy of the book there’s a DVD showing Ritchie in action on the bank with the famous Yateley North Lake fish at 45lb 12oz, later named Bazil, and an audio recording of one of his raucous, stand-up slide shows from the still-talked-about Cassien tour.

Book Review:

I absolutely love this book! It’s a classic! From my early carp fishing days in the 1980’s & 1990’s, Ritchie Mcdonald was a name that was rarely out of the Angler’s Mail and other carp magazines.

I used to love reading about him back then because you could guarantee if he was in the Angler’s Mail or the Angling Times he’d be plastered over the front pages holding his latest conquest.

This guy knows his stuff and makes carp fishing look easy. This book shows you that Ritchie is passionate about fishing and literally lives for carp. Not just about catching any old carp but catching the biggest carp in the country.

I don’t think there’s anyone that can quite match his passion for carp fishing. To some people it might seem like an obsession, maybe even bordering addiction! Well lets face it, there’s a lot worse things that you can get addicted to, right!? 🙂

But seriously trying to outwit and catch some of the biggest carp in our waters needs big time commitment and dedication. For a lot of people it’s just not possible to spend that much time carp fishing, even for myself, but if you’re prepared to put in the hard work then the rewards are out there, somewhere in the murky depths!

This book is excellent and has some great tips on different aspects of carp fishing from some of the countries top carp anglers.

Book Review:

A fantastic read  – The Fox Complete Guide to Carp Fishing. The Fox team of carp anglers are well respected and they absolutely know their stuff.

Obviously Fox is still a huge brand and is well respected but when I was growing up pretty much anything to do with carp fishing, in particular carp tackle, then Fox was all over it! But nowadays there are a lot of other companies in the mix that offer a great range of carp tackle.

That said, this book offers some priceless tips on outfoxing some of these stunning fish; with some great advice on the many different aspects involved in catching these beautiful carp!

It has a great section on locating carp and their behaviour patterns including the reasons and theories why this happens. As mentioned many times before location is everything, so this section is not to be overlooked!

It also has a large section on baits, including fishing with boilies, pellets and other particle baits. The best baiting methods to use in certain situations, whether you’re spodding or stalking for carp.

There are also some great other chapters on fishing for carp in or near snags, and summer and winter fishing for carp to name just a few others. Basically this book pretty much covers everything to do with modern day carp fishing.
